To Kill A Mockingbird, One Page at a TimeI think this is a most unusual slogan for such a momentus and important event. The implications of this are deliciously ironic, much in keeping with Ms. Lee's original theme that in order to kill a threat you must resort to peaceful means to resolve the crisis. The counter-irony to that is that even those who do good, such as Atticus Finch, will be persecuted by their neighbors. Their motives will be jealous, envy, spite, fear, and a misunderstanding of the entire situation in context, but human beings are often rather petty, particularly when their sense of self and their own egos are in play. So it is that Atticus is a Christ-like figure who unintentionally draws heat for daring to take on unpopular causes by championing the cause of the underdog. So it is that Atticus is deeply misunderstood, even by members of his own race, but embraced openly by the black community for having the courage and fortitude to embrace causes that, while justified morally, are a threat to the status quo. Those who challenge the status quo and the existing manner of things, particularly in small southern libraries, will always draw heat when human nature comes into play---all of its malicious spite, juvenile banter, salcious gossip, and general immaturity. Indeed, the implications of the slogan of the project could be easily interpreted as downright criminal, and by that I mean criminal merely in the audacity of the breathtaking, black comedy and deep irony that is personified by the title of Ms. Lee's novel.
